In a White Light

for violin and piano (1998)
with noise generators or recorded wind (performer can choose either version)
the violin is  scordatura, G/C/G#/E
duration is c. 8′

In a White Light for violin and piano explores a human/environmental/instrumental musical ecology. Environmental body, instrumental body, and the performer’s bodies combine in a sonic ecosystem from which the music arises and into which it decays. Musical objects evolve and then recede into noise. Each performer vocalizes sounds that introduce a noise vocal  accompaniment to their instrumental sound, a link between the body of the instrument and that of the performer. A noise track (later replaced by a recording of wind) is played into the concert space. The noise sound creates a sonic frame within which the music occurs.  The noise/wind also forms a larger link between the concert environment and the performers. In the end, the music diminishes into a repeated melody and finally into breath.
