grand rights licensing of Matthew Burtner’s music

Museums and galleries : The basic license to include a sound art work by Matthew Burtner in an exhibition with free admission is $100.  Normally, museum and gallery exhibitions fall under grand rights and do not pay performance royalties. This fee covers the use of a piece in such grand rights contexts. This fee is in addition to purchasing the media/performance materials through the portfolio (typically $20-$30 per piece). The fee covers the entire run of the exhibition. For example, if the exhibition lasts one month, this single fee covers playback of the piece for the full month. A traveling exhibition must pay the fee for each new location or negotiate a unique fee, and if the exhibition is relaunched at some point in the future after the original run is ended, the fee must be renegotiated as if it is a second exhibition.

The museum grand rights license covers sound broadcast of a piece. If the work needs to be adapted for the gallery setting, for example by editing the audio, mixing a multi-channel diffusion, or installing some visual material to accompany the sound — any work that requires the input and planning of the composer to adapt the piece —  an additional commission agreement needs to be negotiated.

Television, film, podcast, radio, etc: Grand rights licensing is required but projects vary widely in scope and therefore must be negotiated individually. Please contact music@matthewburtner.com

Dance: The basic license to include a musical work by Matthew Burtner in a dance performance is $100.  Normally, dance shows falls under grand rights and do not pay performance royalties. This fee covers the use of a piece in such grand rights contexts. This fee is in addition to purchasing the media/performance materials through the portfolio (typically $20-$30 per piece). The fee covers the entire run of the show lasting one week or less. For example, if a dance company run includes five shows over a week, this single fee covers playback of the piece for all five shows.

The dance grand rights license covers sound broadcast of an existing piece. If the work needs to be adapted for the dance setting, for example by editing the audio, an additional commission agreement needs to be negotiated.
