Wooden Dance in Fourteen Time
for viola (2013)
with electronics (and the violist plays a wood block).
duration is c. 7′
Wooden Dance in Fourteen Time (2013) for solo viola plays with the number 14. The violist plays a wood block at the beginning of the piece, then transitions to pizzicato and bowing. The computer elaborates each of these timbral worlds into a rich wood/viola rhythmic texture, like a woven stick basket. Polymetrics in various subdivisions of 14 create both the micro-rhythmic detail and the macro-harmonic structure. Time is simultaneously compressed and expanded creating a space for the viola, this instrument of sublime soulfulness and sparking virtuosity. Wooden Dance in Fourteen Time was composed for Michael Hall.
